Álvaro Mercado

Álvaro Mercado is an architect and PhD researcher (CONICYT-Chile Fellow) at the Faculty of Architecture of the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

He graduated in Architecture from the School of Architecture and Design of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso in Chile (PUCV), where he remains an assistant professor since 2011.

His doctoral research focuses on the geo-poetics towards the South American extent, produced by the School of Valparaíso-PUCV since 1965 in the Travesías de Amereida–a collective and situated practice of architecture developed in the inland of the continent–. His research decodes how through the geo-poetic bases, the situated experiences of traveling, mapping/drawing and making low-tech Works of architecture across territories became a radical and critical practice to understand the colonial and contemporary urbanization in the South American extent.
