Simon De Muynck

Simon De Muynck is the coordinator of the Centre d’écologie urbaine asbl, a research fellow at the ULB and a consultant at Troisième Pilier. With a Master’s degree in Environmental Science and Management, he has spent more than fifteen years developing a career at the intersection of academic research, participatory action research and urban political ecology.

A researcher at ULB-IGEAT and subsequently at ULB-LoUIsE, and an associate member of the ULB’s Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Urban Studies (LIEU), he has published several scientific articles in interdisciplinary journals (Journal of Cleaner Production, Flux, International Journal of Action Research, Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, Nouvelle revue de psychosociologie) as well as numerous research reports for Brussels-based institutions. He is a regular speaker at conferences, training courses and seminars. He has also taught on an ad hoc basis at FOPES-UCL, HELB Ilya Prigogine and ULB, as well as on various training programmes focusing on urban ecology.

“My previous work has mainly focused on urban transitions, territorial metabolisms, bio-waste, contaminated soil and urban agriculture. In recent years, I have been exploring in greater depth the fields of environmental inequalities and Brussels’ adaptation to climate change, as well as the concept of climate vulnerability, with a focus on heat stress and the links between social justice, public health and urban dynamics. My career has been shaped by a desire to link academic knowledge, experiential knowledge and collective action. I strive to conduct engaged, situated action research that is attentive to both the concrete forms of environmental injustice and the democratic levers for ecological transformation in Brussels, the city where I was born, which I walk through every day and which I love.”
